Over the weekend just gone the Flying Fifteen section held its annual pre-season regatta. In spite of the ominous weather forecast, there were six boats who braved the cold conditions.  We welcomed Simon and Aileen Lucas sailing Forever Young who had travelled from Albany to participate as well as Philippa Packer and Dean McAullay sailing Absolutely FFabulous from Freshie.  Also we welcomed Rob Hyde sailing with Greg Tonnison and Keith Wignall sailing with Jen Sims.  Both were crewing for the very first time on a 15.
RO Kim Peaker got racing underway shortly after 10:00am in a light and very shifty wind. Greg Tonnison and Rob on Spot the Difference broke the start in the first race, with Philippa finishing first, the Lucas’s second and Carl and Kristine Pettersson on Faffin in third place.

Race 2 commenced in similar conditions after some course adjustments.  Greg and Rob were a little more conservative in their start in this race and finished first, followed by Philippa and Dean with Carl and Kristine third.

Before the commencement of the next race, RO Peaker expressed his concern to all competitors at the lateness of their starts, “boats were nearly two boat lengths behind the start line”.  One wag who shall remain nameless shouted “well, move the boat back!”FF2
Race 3 commenced with a much more tidy start as can be seen in this picture with the class flag being lowered with all boats about to cross the line.  Greg and Rob finished first, with Tim Walker and Alan Sharpe on FFollow us second with Philippa and Dean third.  By this time, lunch was calling.  The weather was just holding, and we all managed to make it ashore when we had a shower of rain.FF3

Back on the water for Race 4 – marks were laid, and the breeze was steady at around 6 knots.  After filling their tummies, Tim and Alan performed well, taking out this race, with Carl and Kristine second and Philippa and Dean third.

Race 5 commenced in a dying breeze with Tim and Alan establishing an unassailable lead by the third mark, only to be thwarted by the RO when he raised the N flag.  The breeze had completely disappeared, seemingly not to return anytime soon.  By mutual agreement the rest of the day was called off. FF4
It was evident that more foul weather was on its way – fortunately everyone was off the water by the time a 30 knot squall with rain and hail hit the club.

Final corrected results factoring in one drop for the four races:

Equal first on 6 points – Spot the Difference and Absolutely FFabulous, third FFollow Us on 7, fourth Faffin  on 8, fifth Forever Young on 12 and Jen Sims with Keith Wignall on Yes No Maybe on 17.

In spite of the cooler spring weather a good time was had by all. Thanks to RO Kim Peaker with Sandy Dunn and Anne Sharpe assisting on the start boat, and thanks to Doug Cowie on the mark laying boat.  We look forward to Opening Day next Sunday. See you then.
