POWER SECTION: PATRON’S PERPETUAL TROPHY – 23 September 2017

The Patron’s Perpetual Trophy, the last Consistency event for the season capped off a busy weekend.  The Coffee Point Marine Services CPYC 2017 State Time Trial Awards Night Dinner was held at Claremont Yacht Club on Friday night and South of Perth Yacht Club hosted a Friday Night Fundraiser for Melanoma WA.

The fundraiser for Melanoma WA raised an amazing amount of $14,000-15,000 for research.  In conjunction with the fundraiser, Melanoma WA arranged for the Lions Cancer Institute Skin Screening bus to be at the Club on Friday and Saturday.  A total of 114 members took the opportunity to get checked and surprisingly men outnumbered women 70 to 44.  Of the 114 screened 43 had never been screened before.  The screening identified 5 people with a total of 11 life-threatening lesions!  Power Captain Amanda Watson thanked Lyn Martin and her team, Lana, Erica, Toby Pearson and Lynda for all their work in bringing this worthwhile and potentially life-saving event to SoPYC.  It was two years in making and a very timely reminder to all who participate in boating and outdoor activities to have regular check-ups.  Melanoma WA’s logo says it all: ‘We will triumph over melanoma and skin cancer together!’

Amanda then thanked the Sponsors, Checkpointers and Start Team and called on PC Colin Cowden to present the Patron’s Perpetual Trophy for 2017 to Golden Eye: SKIPPER David Purnell NAVIGATOR Joan Purnell.IMG_2438

BENT PROP AWARD
The Bent Prop was not awarded this week.   Although there were many flag violations the recommendation was for the offenders to read Section 11 of The Red Book.  The closest to a misdemeanour was Jim Gooding – seen wandering aimlessly along the jetty looking for Open Circuit which had been moved to back to its original pen further along the jetty.  He was obviously still looking and didn’t get to the bar until after the announcement so narrowly missed out on the Bent Prop Award this time.Port Starboard

Interesting Fact #22:
Only one event has been cancelled due to bad weather this season. The Pelican Section Trophy scheduled for 1 July was called off but the intrepid SoPYC Time Triallers and Checkpointers have braved the elements for every other event on the calendar.  Fingers crossed for Closing Day next Saturday and don’t forget to nominate.  It is a Novelty event and Starter Garry Morrison has some fun in store…..
