Power Section 13 May 2017 – Irene Sherwell Memorial Trophy

The Irene Sherwell Memorial Trophy event was held in near perfect conditions, apart from a smoke haze that increased the challenge on cross-checks.  Competitors hoped it might also make it difficult for Checkpointers to monitor the transits.  But no, the eagle-eyes steadily stripped points from all but the infallible few…

Neredes 11 - SKIPPER: Ian Blanckensee NAVIGATOR: Adele Blanckensee, took out the Irene Sherwell Memorial Trophy with a commendable score of 9 points lost.Power 1

LEAST POINTS LOST: was yet another three-way tie with Amazon – SKIPPER: Steve Wall NAVIGATOR: Amanda Watson; Dalusional -  SKIPPER: Troy Dalglish NAVIGATOR: Dee Kelly and Kryptonite - SKIPPER: Justin Taylor NAVIGATOR: Anton Jennings, all completing the course with the loss of only five points.Power 7

Mothers’ Day was acknowledged a day early with a complimentary glass of bubbles for all mothers, grandmothers and carers.

The first round of port came courtesy of Brian Smith who was named Power Yacht Person of the Year at Thursday night’s YWA annual presentations.  Many more rounds followed as the results for the day’s event were announced.

New Power Vice Captain John Spanos was on hand to present retiree roses to Lyn Martin who is stepping down after five years at the helm of the ladies luncheon group.  Lyn has done a sterling job, the group is the envy of our sister clubs.  The calibre of the guest speakers and the range of topics covered has been outstanding.  Funds have been raised for women’s refuges and Christmas presents for the Children’s Starlight Foundation.  Lyn will be a hard act to follow.Power 3

Power Captain Amanda Watson welcomed Avon Sherwell’s widow Beryl, and daughter Dianne Ward, to the dais to present the flags and trophies for the day’s event.  It was Beryl’s first visit back to the Club since Avon’s passing in February.   She thanked everyone for making her so welcome, saying how much she had appreciated the flowers and condolences from the Power Section.

Summer Mist - SKIPPER: Morrie Stevens NAVIGATOR: Tom Armstrong, went over the start line at someone else’s start time.  Morrie finally figured it out but not before accumulating 171 points!Power 8

Chilly Mussel – SKIPPER: Steve Leech NAVIGATOR: Julie Leech, chose the wrong time to go off course and head to Inner/Outer instead of Nedlands/Outer.  Amazon was rapidly in pursuit and Amanda had a bird’s eye view of the misdemeanour.  “Nothing to do with me” said Julie.  “I’m only the navigator – he insists on giving everyone a cheery wave as we go by rather that concentrate on where we are going.”  Keep up the good work, Steve.Power 9

Had Amazon been at Foam Spit a little later, Amanda may have had another contender for the Bent Prop.

As Kryptonite rounded Foam it appeared to suddenly go into warp drive.  The resulting bow wave swamped the cockpit of a nearby vessel.  “Perhaps I should rename my boat Superman” mused the startled skipper, noting it shared the super hero’s vulnerability to the exotic substance.

Fun Fact from Facebook:

Someone, somewhere on the Swan River said “Bridesmaids for the second week in a row in yesterday’s time trial.  Second on handicap and second sort of on least points lost – one behind a three-way tie of 5 points”.  Guess who?

Interesting Fact #3

It was Amanda Watson’s 59th birthday on Sunday.  The BIG 60 next year, Amanda.  Party, party!
