LASER
The Laser is a single handed sailing dinghy. It is a strict one design class, every boat identical and therefore the competition is a measure of each sailor’s skills.
The Laser Formula accommodates sailors of different builds and abilities by havingthree different rig setups using the same hull.
The Laser 4.7 has a sail area of 4.7m2. It is primarily focused at younger and lighter sailors as a feeder class to the other rigs.
The Laser Radial has a sail area of 5.7m2. It is currently the Olympic Women’s class, but can be sailed by sailors that are too light for a full rig.
The Laser Full Rig has a sail area of 7m2. This is the original standard rig for the Laser, and is the Olympic Men’s class.
For sailors considering hopping into a Laser soon, the Western Australian Laser Association (WALA) provide a sail hire deal whereby you can hire a 4.7 sail & mast for a season. This is a great alternative to buying a new sail to start off.
South of Perth
We have a good mix of experienced and younger sailors starting their Laser campaign. Training is provided during the summer season on most Sunday mornings prior to the afternoon races.
As the Laser is an international class, there are also many Regattas at local State, National and International level. Many SoPYC members are regular competitors on the Laser circuit.
We are always on the lookout for new membersfor the Laser fleet who will be made very welcome.
