FLY A FLYING 15, A CLASS RUMOURED TO BE SAILED IN HEAVEN!
The International Class One Design Flying 15 was designed by Uffa Fox in 1947. It is a high performance, light weight, planing keel boat that has stood the test of time, providing fast, exciting, ‘close to the water’ racing for sailors of all ages.
Crew make up ranges from mates who still remember wooden boat sailing, through husbands and wives, family and group members of all ages, to ‘young guns’ that have few wood or varnish memories!!
It is possible to start competitive ’15 sailing for $2- 4000 in an older ‘Classic’ fleet boat and if the bug really bites, to move to more recently built boats priced from lower double figures upwards. Newer ‘Open’ fleet boats also become available, and for those who desire brand new, a local professional boat builder produces a World class product, fitted out and equipped as required.
We number past State, Australian and even World Title holders among our regular ’15 sailors here, whose combined wealth of tuning tips and knowledge is readily and freely available. We are also a very sociable section and hold regular ‘after sailing’ social activities and functions of various kinds.
Many classes promote themselves as friendly to new comers, not too expensive, easily maintained as well as being fast and technically challenging. All or part of this may be true for them – but the Flying 15 delivers it all - and much more!!
These facts, and our large, close and enthusiastic weekly racing fleet, makes this club home to the largest Flying 15 fleet in the Southern hemisphere, if not [arguably] the world!!
